Why this works

Two findings, a century apart

A claim invites a verdict

Your mind treats a statement as a claim, and a claim has to be judged. The moment you assert something your nervous system has evidence against, part of you starts building the counter-case: no you're not β€” remember last March.

You didn't install a belief. You ran a review of every reason it isn't true, out loud, twice a day. That's the resistance. It isn't weak willpower β€” it's good evidence, pointed the wrong way.

The law of reversed effort

Γ‰mile CouΓ© spent thirty years studying suggestion and found that when the will and the imagination conflict, the imagination always wins β€” and the harder the will pushes, the stronger the opposing picture gets.

A plank on the floor, you walk across without a thought. The same plank between two rooftops, you can't take a step. Nothing about your legs changed. What changed is the picture, and no amount of willpower corrects an image.

Which is why strain is diagnostic: if your affirmation takes effort to say, you're not affirming. You're arguing.

How to practice it

  • 1Twenty repetitions, twice a day. Not more β€” more is effort, and effort is the enemy.
  • 2At the two soft windows: the first minutes after you wake, and the last minutes before you fall asleep.
  • 3In an even, unhurried voice. Not performed, not pushed.
  • 4One line, held for weeks. Not a rotating list of thirty.
  • 5Let interruptions deepen it β€” a noise, an itch. Decide in advance each one takes you further in.
